Samuel H. Gardner – A Real Life Forrest Gump?
May 15, 2010
Samuel H. Gardner was born with a early stage defect, he was forced to wear leg braces the first few years of his life. Developing throughout life into a true outdoorsman, he has faced may challenges and physical roadblocks, ultimately leading him to go All-In.
In January of 2011, Samuel will set off on a year-long hike, hitting all of the major trails of the United States. Beginning in New York, he will hike along the northern border of the United States to North Dakota, catch a train south to the trailhead of the Pacific Coast Trail, ending near the northern border of Washington. Continuing from the north, he will then hike down the Continental Divide Trail, take a train to Maine, and finish his trek in Georgia, the end of the Appalachian Trail.
All I can say to Sam is good luck, we will follow you along your route and hopefully, be able to meet up and hike a bit with you. Have a great trip. For more information, head over to www.TheInitiativeSite.com.

Man Made Reef in India Goes Off
May 3, 2010
ASR, in conjunction with the Indian Government created this artificial reef that not only helps to prevent beach erosion but created a nice little wave in the meantime. As the reef matures, this will become home to different types of fish and sea life that will benefit the local community even more. I just can’t figure out one thing – why didn’t they make it an A-frame?
Tribeca Film Festival Halfpipe Jam
April 25, 2010
After the screening of “The Birth of Big Air”, the attention turned to this 13-foot ramp set up opposite of the blow-up movie screen.
Some fun action went down, check out some pics after the jump.
We just got back from a night at the Tribeca Film Festival‘s Drive-In Theatre and the premiere of “The Birth of Big Air“, a documentary on the life of Mat Hoffman growing up in Oklahoma, the development of BMX freestyle and of course, big air. The event space was amazing, extremely clean, plenty of fresh air, and a great ambiance set right on the river. A few boats pulled right up next to the screen to grab a view, and there was ample seating and room to stretch your legs. Set up at the World Financial Center Plaza, I could not think of a nicer way to check out some new flicks and enjoy a mellow night out.
The movie focused on Mat’s life and his career, always pushing the sport for his own pleasure. There were no fancy competitions or high salaries, and sponsorship was scarce. After blowing up on the professional circuit almost overnight, along with the rise of BMX riding, Matt quickly became the person to beat and progressed what everyone knew to be freestyle BMX. Salaries started to increase and sponsors were more available for riders, until the sport hit a serious depression. During this time, a select group of riders kept pushing themselves with Mat at the forefront. No one else could air as high, let alone pull off the same tricks at those heights.
Needless to say, the movie was excellent and I highly recommend checking it out. It is playing again in the city next Saturday, May 1, 2010. Check out the trailer below:
Indoor Shredding
April 24, 2010
When we were young, it used to be a blast to grab some sleeping bags and sled down the carpeted stairs in the house. The nylon of the sleeping bag vs. the carpet fibers was perfect – there was very little friction and the bags would pick up a ton of speed. You used to go screaming down the steps, try to bank around the hook or the L shape of the stairway (Most of the time you would just hit the wall) and then slide down the rest.
Well, I just came across some photos from Tim MacPherson. It looks like these kids are taking indoor shredding to the next level. I mean, that is what the younger generations are supposed to do, right?
Throwback Video Remix – The Golden Age of Video
April 24, 2010
I am not quite sure why this is such a great video, is it the actual way the music turns out? Or, it could just be that it brings back so many memories of excellent films and shows that I have not seen in some time. Ghostbusters, Short Circuit, Willy Wonka, The Simpsons, Family Guy, the A-Team. How could you go wrong?
